Eastside's History

Eastside's History

As one of Riverside’s oldest and largest residential neighborhoods, Eastside has a rich history full of stories about the African-American and Mexican families who came to Riverside in the early 1900s to start fresh. Eastside represented the chance to own a home, start a business and give children a better life. Visitors can walk the streets and see the homes and gardens of these enterprising families, as much of the property is still owned by their descendants.

Though Eastside has faced hardships in the past, community members are taking steps to take back the streets and rejuvenate the area. Residents are banding together to clean up the neighborhood and make it beautiful again. At the same time, businesses along University Avenue have partnered with the City of Riverside to sponsor revitalization programs.
